Good morning guys, I see other comments that you arrived safely, which is good news. I’m sure you are already at work this morning. Have a good week. Guess what? It is snowing here! Enjoy the sun!!
No doubt that you are hard at work. I know for sure that is Dan’s middle name. Snowed again last night. Brooke is shoveling the 3 inches off part of the driveway. Enjoy the sunny weather! God bless you al1. (15 second smoochy to Danny)
Hey Daddy Dan!!! I hope you are having a blessed time down in Guatemala. I pray for you and your safety as well as everyone else down there. I can’t wait to see you in a few days!!! Miss you lots.
Love you lots!!! Your daughter ~ Cara
Dave~
Things are well here- another few inches of snow to add to the tally, and more predicted later this week. Are you guys getting a lot accomplished over there? Praying that all is well! Love you!
Hey everybody, things are going great. we have to learn how to post pictures yet, but we are taking some.
To my family, thanks for the prayers! Ilove you withall that i am! I know about the snow, sorry. I’m praying things are going well for you guys, I miss you all. If the week goes as fast as today did, it’ll seem like we would be going home in a couple of days(it went really fast that is).
So far we have been blessed with good health and my medical skills haven’t been needed, praise for that! I am trying to remember some of the construction skills I learned after high school but that has been a long time ago…good thing “grunt work” is in demand!
The weather has been very nice, similar to Iowa in June, low humidity & nice temps…mid 7o’s…
Praying the weather is good back home and we thank you all for your prayers for us to have a good week and the Lord to work through us as His will directs….
It is a little after 5am and one of the teams that was here has left for the airport and the orphnage team is just pulling off the drive. The construction team was told we cold sleep longer but I had to get up because breakfast smelled to good (pancakes and eggs). Yesterday was a good day! We got the third story framed and started hanging sheetrock. We still have framing to do on the second floor but that is progressing (waiting on the plumber again HaHa). Seriously, pray that we have and can find the supplies we need. We are very well equipped at the base but it only takes a couple plumbing fittings. Even so, we can find plenty to do and plenty of laughs in the meantime.
To my family, I am so proud of you. Thank you Brooke for helping with the snow and everyone else. I hope Chad was able to scoop the majority. About the snow, Rog and I had a discussion that it was so amazing that it was only 36 hours since we left the frozen tundra and we had already confortably forgot about. (It’s amazing what a jet plane and a few hours of 70 degree weather does to your memory!!!) I wish you all could be here. Partly because I miss you and partly because of the weather, and partly to further apreciate how God has blessed us, but mostly to feel how God is at work in the ministry. It’s a blessing for me to be here and I am thankful for you allowing me to go.
And now for the most difficult part of being gone this week: HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROOKE!!! I am so sorry I am not there to give you a great big hug! I love so much and I am so very proud of you! I am praying that you have the most spectacular birthday and that your beautiful smile is more contagious today than ever!! Today, I thank God for the miracle you are to mom and I!
To Cara and Cole, I am very proud of you both and I pray God will be with you through your day.
Tonna, I know this wasn’t the best timing for a trip and I apologize for that. I have faith that your mom is doing well and that God would continue to give you peace in that situation. I Love You, sweetheart! Daniel Mark
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROOKE!!

If you want to see what we are doing there has been pictures posted. Go to the upper right portion of this page and look for the pictures tab.
I’m tired of hunting and pecking so I will blog more later!
Daddy-Thanks for typing me the note. I will tell you my whole day later, after my party. I love and miss you very much! I remember the really long hug I gave you before you left. Love, Brooke
Everyone enjoyed hearing from you! We are doing quite well, despite the snow. =) Don’t worry, we’ll save you some. Yesterday I thought it was only going to be a little bit, so I scooped the driveway by hand…three times!! Turns out, there would have been enough for Nate to scoop. Ah well, good exercise!
Rich and Stacy came over last night to help make Svanna’s actual bday more festive. It was a good time. Missed you!
Love you lots!!! Praying for you, and glad you’re there (event though we miss you)!!
Hi all!
Looks like things are progressing well. Wish we could be there! Have a great week–Brandy, don’t fall off the scaffolding. (Arlin’s comment) Dan–isn’t the worship time sweet? Ray, here’s a poke in the ribs, just for you. To all of you –enjoy the weather & the fellowship & the blessing God is pouring out!
Say Hi to Dan S (ask him if he lost any ladders, lately)
Arlin & Janene
Thinking of you all often, especially as we scoop snow. God has many blessings in store for each of you. Make sure you look for them. Praying for safety and much work accomplished. Can’t even imagine how much is getting done with the team /skills you guys brought with you. With Christ’s love Lori
Daddy-here is how my day went. Mom brought cupcakes for treats to school and Abby for show and tell. I handed out suckers at the end of the day to my classmates. After school, we had cake and ice cream with the Haverdinks at the hospital with grandma. Then went to eat with the Haverdinks at the Nederlander’s Grill. Allie gave me a flower. Cara and Cole gave me a teddy bear. I am going to study with mom for a science test tomorrow. Miss you a lot!!!!! I love you, Brooke (P.S. mom checked for spelling)
Hi Back in Iowa had a good day finished framing third floor and almost done rocking alot of second floor framed Dave moved waterheater and making headway on roughin plumbing . Have good mealswith lots of chicken…… meals with chicken in them… some chicken .
Hey Dave~
We are praying that the right things are found so that you can continue the work that you need to. Things here are going well. Kaylee is in bed, so I am catching up on some stuff. From the pictures and Ray’s blog it looks/sounds like things are taking shape and getting done! Take care!
Love you!
Amanda
PS Some were wondering why we couldn’t write on each person’s page. It only has your picture. Do you or someone need to activate that??
The Lord has blessed us again with a good day…much accomplished, most of the third floor finished off, Dave/Brandy moved the water heater, second floor ceiling is finished and ready for sheet rock to be hung tomorrow (Wednesday right?)
Amazing how quickly have gotten used to not worrying about time or cell phones, or email or any of the busyness that seems to plague us back home. Verrrrry nice… certainly could get the hang of that!
This evening we had the great Guatemala coffee escapade…. we’ll fill in the details when we get back…just goes to show the lengths caffeine junkies will go to for a “fix” when the coffee pot is out of commission…
Thanks again for the prayers and we will keep you posted!
Hey Crew, it looks like you guys are getting alot accomplished and we continue to pray for safety and no major hang ups. Thanks for the updates, it’s cool to see the progress you are making. Keep up the great work you are doing and we can’t wait to hear about your experiences when you get back. May you be blessed as you use your gifts to be a blessing!!
I’m sorry for the full details of Brooke’s extravagent birhtday. It is somewhat embarrssing how we celebrate, knowing how hard you are working for those in Guatemala. My prayer is that God watches your every footstep. Thank you for your work down there. Enjoy the weather-we have another ice mix/snow for Thursday through Friday. God bless…
Greetings to your work team from Dan V.’s sister in Northwest IL! Praying that you will have a safe & productive week. This website is a cool way for your families to stay connected while you are far away.
Dan – I love you little brother & I’m very proud of you!(you knew that right?) Looking forward to hearing about your experiences. Reading those little notes from my neices to their daddy gets me a little choked up. I know they (and Tonya, Cole & Abby) will be glad to have you home.
I miss you so much. I love you a lot. Today we started to learn about Central America. I told Mr. Bowar that you were in Guatemala building a church. He said that was really cool and that I have a cool dad. And I do! I’m going to miss you at my next volleyball tournament on Saturday. But it will be great to have you back on Sunday.
P.S. I think you’re the greatest Dad in the world!
So far today we’ve hung and carried a LOT of drywall, got the third floor apartments mostly finished and even started some mudding this evening.
Bit of an adventure tonight when a large water tank fell off the truck hauling back to base. A crew is making concrete path’s on “security hill” (those who have been here know what this is)… Anyhow the tank split on the bottom and we used some good ‘ole midwest ingenuity and with a soldering gun, hair dryer, window sealant patch and a putty knife… we got the tank patched! Filling the tank tonight and it is holding so far…
Hope you are all staying warm and we thank you for the prayers… Praying for safety and warm weather for all back home as well, sounds like winter is digging in again…
Things are going great and getting alot done. I didn’t think I’d be doing much welding on the trip but you get used where needed. So Justin, I made sure your bathroom floor has alot of strenght to it. We got some windows and doors framed out of the second floor and started muddin the third. Started rockin the second and have the base to the showers in. so we had fun hauling in pails of mud up to the second floor and throwing sheetrock thru the walls. Plus we got to shove Chris into the water tank to fix some cracks in it after it fell off the back of the truck that was out putting concrete on the driveway in.
To my family,
Thanks for the note Shi. I miss you all very much. Shianne, I’m sorry I’ll miss your games on sat. but I know you’ll have a great time and do good. Svanna, I hope you had a great b-day on monday. The rest of you I’m sure a being good:) for mom and I know your having fun.
Shi, we are actually working on the main building for PBM. We are building living quarters for the volenteers that come down to work here like Justin and Vicki. WE are hoping to do something else on sat maybe but it depends on if we think we are far enough along by then.
I’ll write more later( I tried last nite but I lost about 4 paaragraghs before I got it submitted) and it’s time for some sleep.!!!
Hey everyone that is checking this sight! You can now post comments to the individual team members by clicking on our names. This feature was just activated tonight by someone way more computer savy than I!
Thank you so much for your prayers and love! Continue to pray for energy as there is much we would like to accomplish for the mission here at the base camp.
Pray for Dan and Heidi as Heidi is heading back to the states tommorrow, as is the orphnage team.
Glad to hear all of you are doing well. I asked MOM if she noticed how slick the roads were this morning and she said “I wasn’t going that fast”. (Guess I gave myself away again). We’re looking forward to seeing the kids DANCE @ Unity tomorrow night and hoping roads will be clear. (predicting LIGHT SNOW thru Sunday) We’re thinking of you and praying for your safe journey home. LOVE Mom & Dad
We went sheetrock crazy today and dan got quite abit of muddin done. We are missing some electrical supplies that are holding us up some but are doing everything to leave holes for him to finish up.
We are not going hungry either, today was tacos for lunch and dominos pizza for supper. The food has been excellent and I’m even learning about 9 & 3 o’clock breaks:)
Carey Beth, I hope things are going well and your not getting stuck in the house. Work is keeping us busy and with the music playin it keeps us movin rite along. I keep counting the hours(around 67 to go) til I home to see you, I miss you and love you always.
Shi, Sierra, and Svanna- have fun at the dance team practice and at the game. Vidio it for me please!
Tye, Gabe, Jaden, and Summer, I LOVE and MISS YOU guys and can’t wait to see you!
Pretty much finished up the sheet rock today for all the apartments… a scaffold was constructed to finished tacking up the sheet rock on the face of the apartments and to have the mud be applied… Ray was up top quite a bit along with Brandy and we have some pics up them up on the “catwalk”…
The weather continues to be warm and Dan Smith relayed to us this evening that the temp readout on his Explorer said 89 at one point today… Knew it was warm but not that much!
Probably will be quite the shock to return to 20′s and snow back home… Seeing our families and a good night sleep will be great to return to though.
We walked down to the local spring yesterday and “talked” with some farmers who were cutting avocado saplings, growing them and then shipping them to Mexico (or so we gathered)…
Well, it was a really big day and we are pretty much wiped out.
We finished most of the mudding today, shower floors poured and cement board hung.
Went to the market this afternoon… I would probably go broke if I had to haggle on items for a living…feel guilty in that they have no money and we are bartering for a better price when it is pretty reasonable all ready… Know this is part of life here though and how things work.
We were blessed with a gorgeous sunset on the way home today… believe that God was saying “Good job fella’s…”
Some not so good news though. One of the van’s used to transport mission teams likely has an engine that is out. This is the one they thought was the fuel pump, then the computer, but when they dug further into issues there was metal shavings in the oil and the engine is likely toast…
Pray that the resources will be available or a re-built engine turns up so that the van can be put into use very soon. Couple of mission teams coming back to back in the next few weeks.
It has been a great experience and I truly believe it would only be more so with the opportunity to take part in home building in a village. Lord willing I will certainly come back.
Please continue to pray for the staff here and their mission…also appreciate prayers for safe travels home for the construction team.
I am glad to hear you arrived safely and not surprised that your busy at work
I talked to mom and dad tonight, and they said you have a LOT to do this week! Good thing you got started right away.
Hey!!
A special shoutout to my honey. =) So glad you arrived safely and eager to hear (read) how it’s going. Praying for you all, and so are our kiddos.
God Bless! (Love ya, Brandy!)
